Also to be published this coming summer is Nick Birns's Understanding Anthony Powell a criical study of Powell's work in the contect f his contemporaries. To quote the blurb from Amazon Suggesting that the literary world is just beginning to realize the extent of Anthony Powell's achievements, Nicholas Birns provides a fresh examination of the British writer's career and growing reputation in this introduction to his work. Understanding Anthony Powell by Nicholas Birns is published by Univeristy of Aouth Carolina Press in Augiust 2004 and can be pre-ordered from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk.
After a number of delays, it seems that Michael Barber's long awaited but unofficial biography of Anthony Powell will be published in June 2004. I've not had the pleasure of seeing any of Barber's text in advance of publication, however if the book is as interesting and lively as his papers at each of the 2001 and 2003 Anthony Powell conferences it promises to be a good read. Anthony Powell, A Life by Michael Barber is published by Duckworth in June 2004 and can be pre-ordered from Amazon.co.uk.
Today there are two new additions to the website. Firstly, the various news pages have all been replaced by this News Weblog. The idea is that this will contain all news items relating to Anthony Powell, the Anthony Powell Society, and the website. Secondly, with a couple of new books about Powell being published in the near future, the time was right to put links on the homepage to facilitate ordering them through our associates.
AN Wilson, mentions the Society his World of Books column in today's Daily Telegraph. [With thanks to Stephen Holden]
A German friend reports that she was watching the US sitcom Home Improvement last night when one of the characters quoted Powell's comment: Getting old is like being increasingly penalized for a crime you never committed. [With thanks to Stephen Holden] |
