Wallace Collection Powell Centenary Exhibition
November 3, 2005 19:07
|
I, like a number of other Society members,
was at the party last night for the opening of the
Wallace Collection's Powell centenary exhibition:
Dancing to the Music of Time: The Life and Work of Anthony Powell.
I'm not going to try to describe the exhibition (much less the party ),
except to say that it is absolutely fabulous.
Jeremy Warren, Assistant Director of the Wallace,
and his team have put together a wide range
of unseen and unsuspected gems of Powelliana
including many of
the original art works for Powell book covers,
Powell's writing desk and filing cabinet
and lots of original portraits of Powell and his friends -- plus of course the Poussin painting.
The Wallace are to be greatly congratulated on what is an excellent exhibition,
and the Society owes special thanks to Noreen Marshall, Hugh Massingberd and Stephen Holden
for their work with the Wallace on conceptualising the exhibition.
There is also an accompanying book
Seeing Secret Harmonies: Pictures of Anthony Powell.
This isn't an exhibition catalogue but contains pieces by Hilary Spurling,
DJ Taylor and Ferdinand Mount as well as some images from the exhibition with long explanatory captions.
Price £6 from the Wallace Collection shop.
The exhibition is a "must see" not just for Powell fans but for anyone interested in literature and authorship.
The exhibition is on until Sunday 5 February 2006.

The Anthony Powell Society together with The Wallace Collection are
offering a unique 'book group' to discuss key themes and personal views of

Powell specialist or enthusiast who will talk about the novels and lead an
open discussion session.
