Dance on BBC Radio 4
During the years 1979 to 1982 the BBC broadcast a radio adaptation of
Dance.
This was broadcast in four parts each of which covered three of the novels.
I am indebted to John Gould of Phillips Academy, USA for making
the information about the series available.
I'll let John explain, as he did in an email to me:
While in England on sabbatical in 1990, I managed to gain access to the BBC
archives and for a fee of £25 spent an afternoon listening to as much of
the radio broadcast of ADTTMOT as I could,
which translated to 5 reels at approx. 1 hour/reel.
This let me hear AQOU and ABM in their entirety and
the first half of HSH
(I really wanted to hear Scorpio M.'s voice).
It was a fascinating, if somewhat overwhelming, experience.
I still wanted more
at the end of the afternoon, but the reels had me reeling, so to speak.
These dramatisations cannot be released, according to the BBC folks I
talked with, because of copyright problems.
Apparently no one obtained
rights for subsequent uses (such as cassette publication) and all the
actors have scattered,
and no one wants to -- or is able to -- recover them all.
I did get lists of the productions, including casts, dates of broadcast,
duration.
The series was broadcast in four installments:
1979, June 1980, May 1981, and June 1982.
Frederick Bradnum dramatised the entire series.
Noel Johnson was the narrator at the start and played Nicholas as an adult
throughout.
Would folks be interested in more info on this material?
Perhaps I could
expand on what I have, although it is a lot of trivia, except to those who
are REALLY interested in knowing that Madame Leroy was played by Mary
Wimbush.
My notes do say that in AQOU Widmerpool's pomposity is "audible" -- he
was played by Brian Hewlett.
Jean Templar was played by Jane Asher, by the way.
Perhaps, rather than the list discussion, I could do something
with all the material for the actual page, if you'd like.
What follows are the production lists which John has kindly provided,
only lightly edited and kept in their original format except for
being "reduced" from having been kept on 5"x3" index cards ...
